Background of the Study

Leadership training plays a crucial role in shaping the career aspirations of nursing students by equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to take on leadership roles in healthcare settings. In nursing, effective leadership is essential for improving patient outcomes, managing teams, and implementing organizational changes. Leadership training programs have been identified as essential components of nursing education, helping students develop critical management skills, enhance their decision-making abilities, and foster a sense of professional responsibility (Cummings et al., 2023).

In Taraba State, as in many other regions in Nigeria, nursing education focuses primarily on clinical skills, with leadership training often given less emphasis. This limited focus on leadership development may impact nursing students' career aspirations, preventing them from pursuing leadership positions within healthcare organizations or taking an active role in shaping healthcare policy. However, with healthcare settings evolving rapidly, there is an increasing recognition that leadership competencies are crucial for nurses to thrive in their careers. The inclusion of formal leadership training in nursing education could not only inspire nursing students to aspire to leadership roles but also prepare them to address the challenges of modern healthcare systems (Brown et al., 2024).

The effectiveness of leadership training in influencing career aspirations remains under-researched, particularly in the context of nursing students in Taraba State. This study will explore how leadership training influences the career goals of nursing students, aiming to provide insights into how leadership development can enhance career aspirations and professional growth.

Statement of the Problem

Although leadership training is a vital component of nursing education, there is limited understanding of its impact on the career aspirations of nursing students in Taraba State. Nurses who are prepared with leadership skills are more likely to seek leadership roles, thus influencing the quality of care within healthcare organizations. This study aims to assess the influence of leadership training on nursing students' career aspirations in Taraba State, identifying barriers and opportunities for promoting leadership development.

Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the impact of leadership training on the career aspirations of nursing students in Taraba State.

2. To identify the factors that influence nursing students' interest in leadership roles within healthcare settings.

3. To recommend strategies for incorporating leadership training more effectively into nursing curricula in Taraba State.

Research Questions

1. How does leadership training influence the career aspirations of nursing students in Taraba State?

2. What factors contribute to nursing students' aspirations for leadership roles in healthcare settings?

3. What strategies can be employed to enhance the leadership training component in nursing education in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Leadership training positively influences nursing students’ career aspirations to pursue leadership roles in healthcare settings.

2. Factors such as mentoring, exposure to role models, and the perceived value of leadership training contribute to students' interest in leadership roles.

3. Integrating more comprehensive leadership training programs into nursing curricula will increase nursing students’ career aspirations in leadership positions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students in Taraba State and will assess how leadership training influences their career aspirations. Limitations may include variation in the quality of leadership training across nursing schools, potential biases in self-reported data, and resource constraints in providing leadership training.
